; Using Joseph Smith's death mask and numerous portraits and images of the prophet, the author offers compelling evidence on the physical appearance of Joseph Smith. Author Ephraim Hatch approaches this study of Joseph Smith's portraits from an artistic, rather than a scientific, approach. He does, however, partly base his assessment of portraits using an objective method of comparing the size and realtionship of facial features. He also analyzes, for the first time, the facial features of Joseph's close relatives (mother, brothers, children) . The most suprising results show that the famous RLDS oil painting of Joseph is really not very accurate and that the early supposed photographs of Joseph are definitely photos of the oil painting.
