Brand new softcover book!
; This book was originally published in 1853 in England by Elder Orson Pratt. In the Preface to the original edition he wrote:
"The following pages, embracing biographical sketches and the genealogy of Joseph Smith, the Prophet, and his progenitors, were mostly written previous to the death of the Prophet, and under his personal inspection.
"Most of the historical items have never been published. They will therefore be exceedingly interesting to all Saints and sincere inquirers after the truth, affording them the privilege of becoming more extensively acquainted with the private life and character of one of the greatest prophets that ever lived on the earth. Independent of this, the events which occurred in connection with the history of this remarkable family, are, in themselves, of the most marvelous kind, and of infinite importance in their bearings upon the present and future generations."
Although Elder Pratt was apparently happy with his publication, Brigham Young and others in Utah were not. The book was subsequently destroyed and suppressed. After revision, it was again made available to the Saints in 1901. In the Preface to the revised edition President Joseph F. Smith wrote:
"In September, 1852, Apostle Orson Pratt went on a mission to England . . . And being shown the manuscript copy, he purchased it for a certain sum of money, took it to Liverpool with him, where, without revision and without the consent or knowledge of President Young or any of the Twelve, it was published under his direction in 1853. It was afterwards discovered that the book contained errors, occasioned by its not being carefully compared with historical data. Some of the statements written in the Preface by Elder Pratt were also in error; one especially that the book was mostly written in the lifetime of the Prophet, and that he had read it with approval, was incorrect, since it was written in 1845, the year following his martyrdom. For these reasons and others, mostly of a financial character, it was disapproved by President Young on August 23, 1865, and the edition was suppressed or destroyed."
Because of its historical significance, the edition presented here is the Liverpool, 1853 Edition. ; 5" x 8"; 279 pages
