Overall great condition! ; Pictured among the graduating seniors was Frederick Roberts, the school’s first Black student. Beneath his photograph is the caption: “Industrious. ‘Education’. ‘Thy modesty’s a candle to thy merit’” According to his family’s tradition, Frederick Madison Roberts (1879-1952) was the great-grandson of Sally Hemings, the slave and lover of President Thomas Jefferson. Roberts, after attending the University of Southern California, founded and edited a Los Angeles Black newspaper, which served as a political stepping-stone. In 1918, Roberts became the first African-American elected to the California Legislature as a Republican, where he served for 16 years until defeated by a Black Democrat. Title page erroneously lists the yearbook as "Winter 1902," else where the date is correctly printed 1900. ; 6.25" x 8.75"
