The Parallel Book of Mormon The 1830, 1837, and 1840 Editions, Bench, Curt A. And Joseph Smith
1 The Parallel Book of Mormon The 1830, 1837, and 1840 Editions

Bench, Curt A. And Joseph SmithNew, Smith-Pettit Foundation, 2008,

Hardcover

; Three separate editions of the Book of Mormon appeared during Joseph Smith’s lifetime. These are the 1830 edition, published in Palmyra, New York; the 1837 edition published in Kirtland, Ohio; and the 1840 edition published in Nauvoo, Illinois. The printing of each of these was supervised by Joseph Smith, who made and authorized corrections and improvements to the text of each.

These were the only three editions Joseph Smith was involved with. In the current publication, the text of all three is reproduced in parallel-column format for comparison, allowing readers to see where corrections and other changes were made during the book's first decade. This is the first time for the three editions to be presented in this format. The text is unchanged from the originals, the eccentricities retained but nevertheless re-typeset for ease in reading and comparing.

Curt A. Bench, bookseller and student of Mormon history for over three decades, provides the publication background for these three landmark editions of this work of scripture. Bench recounts the fascinating history behind the appearance of each new edition, all of them produced under primitive frontier conditions and in the context of criticism from outside and inside the church, all of which made their successful production even more remarkable than otherwise.

Symbols in Stone, Brown, Matthew B. & Paul Thomas Smith
2 Symbols in Stone

Brown, Matthew B. & Paul Thomas SmithNew, Covenant Communications, Inc., 2017, American Fork, UT

Paperback

Brand new softcover book!

; "The Universe is built on symbols, lifting our thoughts from man to God, from earth to heaven, from time to eternity...God teaches with symbols; it is His favorite way of teaching." —Orson F. Whitney

Latter-day Saint doctrine is rich in symbolism, and nowhere do we find greater symbolism than in the temple. By examining the symbols on the Nauvoo, Kirtland, and Salt Lake temples, the authors skillfully demonstrate that "we begin to understand the symbolic language of the Lord which, in turn, prepares us for the symbolism that we will encounter within."

Symbols in Stone: Symbolism on the Early Temples of the Restoration is carefully documented using the scriptures as well as recorded accounts of Latter-day Saints who want to better understand the vital role of temples in the latter days.

LIFE EVERLASTING - A Definitive Study of Life after Death, Crowther, Duane S.
5 LIFE EVERLASTING - A Definitive Study of Life after Death

Crowther, Duane S.New, Cedar Fort, Inc., 2006, Springville, UT

Paperback

Brand new softcover, never been read! ; Life Everlasting is a fascinating examination of man's future life from the time of death until his entry into the heavenly realms. The book reaches beyond the commonplace to give profound new insights into the nature of the life to come.

This book examines eyewitness accounts of more than 200 individuals who have ventured into the spirit world and have then returned to tell of their experiences. It also draws extensively from the scriptures and from the discourses of Latter-day Saint leaders. As the evidence of these accounts is analyzed, numerous new understandings are revealed to the reader. Within these pages are vivid descriptions of spirit-world conditions including buildings, landscaping, wearing apparel, organization, occupations, and Church callings. Many instructive descriptions of the amazing capabilities of spirit beings are provided. Of special interest are the vivid descriptions of Jesus Christ as He has appeared to many who have entered into Paradise. The numerous roles of spirit beings who visit the earth, as Gardian Angels and in other capacities, are described in detail. The factors which govern man's time of death are discussed, and the nature of man's "new birth" into the next life is desc! ribed in detail by those who have experienced it.

Life Everlasting peers into the spirit prison and hell and reports conditions in those environments. Then it sweeps forward in time to analyze the nature of the resurrections and final judgment. A careful consideration of the final rewards available to man is made, with detailed and spcific coverage of the fate of the sons of perdition and the destinies of the inhabitants of the telestial, terrestrial and celestial kingdoms. The final chapter is a penetrating explanation of the nature of godhood and exaltation.

Few books have ever combined such a wealth of now concepts and interesting information with the careful presentation, documentation and scholarship of Life Everlasting. Latter-day Saints will find strong evidences which confirm their beliefs in the afterlife. Others, no matter what their religious oriention, will find Life Everlasting to be one of the most far-reaching, comprehensive presentations of life-after-death experiences in print. It is inevitable that this book will continue to be widely read and discussed for many years to come.

6 The First Fifty Years of Relief Society; Key Documents in Latter-day Saint Women's History

Derr, Jill Mulvay & Carol Cornwall Madsen & Kate Holbrook & Matthew J. GrowNew in New Dust Jacket, Church Historian's Press, 2016, Salt Lake City, UT

Hardcover

Brand new hardcover book!

; This collection of original documents explores the fascinating and largely unknown history of the Relief Society in the nineteenth century. The story begins with the founding of the Nauvoo Female Relief Society, and the complete and unabridged minutes of that organization are reproduced in this book for the first time in print. The large majority of the volume covers the lesser-known period after the Relief Society was reestablished in territorial Utah and began to spread to areas as remote as Hawaii and England. Not only did Relief Society women care for their families and the poor, they manufactured and sold goods, went to medical school, gave healing blessings and set apart Relief Society officers, storied grain, built assembly halls, fought for women's suffrage, founded a hospital, defended the practice of plural marriage, and started the Primary and Young Women organizations. Prominent in the documents are the towering figures of Mormon women's history from this period—Emma Smith, Eliza R. Snow, Emmeline B. Wells, Zina D.H. Young, and many others.

Perspectives on Mormon Theology; Scriptural Theology, Faulconer, James E. & Joseph M. Spencer
7 Perspectives on Mormon Theology; Scriptural Theology

Faulconer, James E. & Joseph M. SpencerNew, Greg Kofford Books, Inc., 2015,

Paperback

Brand new softcover book!

; The phrase "theology of scripture" can be understood in two distinct ways. First, theology of scripture would be reflection on the nature of scripture, asking questions about what it means for a person or a people to be oriented by a written text (rather than or in addition to an oral tradition or a ritual tradition). In this first sense, theology of scripture would form a relatively minor part of the broader theological project, since the nature of scripture is just one of many things on which theologians reflect. Second, theology of scripture would be theological reflection guided by scripture, asking questions of scriptural texts and allowing those texts to shape the direction the theologian's thoughts pursue. In this second sense, theology of scripture would be less a part of the larger theological project than a way of doing theology, since whatever the theologian takes up reflectively, she investigates through the lens of scripture. The essays making up this collection reflect attentiveness to both ways of understanding the phrase "theology of scripture." Each essay takes up the relatively un-self-conscious work of reading a scriptural text but then-at some point or another-asks the self-conscious question of exactly what she or he is doing in the work of reading scripture. We have thus attempted in this book (1) to create a dialogue concerning what scripture is for Latter-day Saints, and (2) to focus that dialogue on concrete examples of Latter-day Saints reading actual scripture texts.

Gardner, Richard D.New, Eborn Books, 2013,

Paperback

Brand new softcover book!

; Using a mindset influenced both by scientific training and a deep appreciation of God's love for us, Richard D. Gardner has analyzed the doctrines of the gospel most important to salvation, asking questions and searching for answers and analogies that help explain both the love and logic of the gospel, and the atonement. He also explains Jesus's role as the Firstborn and the Only Begotten, and how we can take advantage of the atonement and become joint heirs with him. Brother Gardner was born in Logan, Utah. He served a mission in Brazil, graduated in biology from Utah State University, and got a PhD in molecular and cellular biology from the University of Arizona. He researched yeast cell cycle control at the University of Virginia. For the past nine years he has taught biology at privately-owned and LDS-oriented Southern Virginia University. The Mormon Church and Blacks; A Documentary History, Harris, Matthew L & Newell G. Bringhurst
11 The Mormon Church and Blacks; A Documentary History

Harris, Matthew L & Newell G. BringhurstNew, University of Illinois Press, 2015,

Paperback

Brand new softcover book!

; The year 1978 marked a watershed year in the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as it lifted a 126-year ban on ordaining black males for the priesthood. This departure from past practice focused new attention on Brigham Young's decision to abandon Joseph Smith's more inclusive original teachings. The Mormon Church and Blacks presents thirty official or authoritative Church statements on the status of African Americans in the Mormon Church. Matthew L. Harris and Newell G. Bringhurst comment on the individual documents, analyzing how they reflected uniquely Mormon characteristics and contextualizing each within the larger scope of the history of race and religion in the United States. Their analyses consider how lifting the ban shifted the status of African Americans within Mormonism, including the fact that African Americans, once denied access to certain temple rituals considered essential for Mormon salvation, could finally be considered full-fledged Latter-day Saints in both this world and the next. Throughout, Harris and Bringhurst offer an informed view of behind-the-scenes Church politicking before and after the ban. The result is an essential resource for experts and laymen alike on a much-misunderstood aspect of Mormon history and belief.

Hatem, JadNew, Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship, 2015,

Paperback

Brand new softcover book!

; Christianity, like other world religions, surprisingly acknowledges the existence of a plurality of human messiahs. In this comparative work, philosopher Jad Hatem examines Mormonism’s Three Nephites, Buddhism’s Bodhisattva, and Islam’s Mahdi—distinctive messianic figures who postpone Heaven, sacrificially prolonging their lives for the benefit of humankind.

Originally published in French, this translation includes two additional papers written by Jad Hatem dealing with aspects of Latter-day Saint belief and a new interview between Hatem and Latter-day Saint philosopher James E. Faulconer.

Postponing Heaven is the first book in the Maxwell Institute’s new series, Groundwork: Studies in Theory and Scripture.

Hardcover

Brand new hardcover book!

; When the Church released photos of the brown seer stone that was owned and used by Joseph Smith, the news ignited a firestorm of curiosity and controversy. People wanted more information and wondered why they hadn't been aware of the stone's existence.

This book discusses the origins of Joseph Smith's seer stones and explores how Joseph used them throughout his life in a way that goes beyond translating the Book of Mormon. It also traces the provenance of his stones once they left his possessions. The authors examine how the Book of Mormon itself provides a storyline about the history of seer stones and how this helped Joseph Smith learn about his own prophetic gifts.

Brand new softcover book!

; Lisel Span has dreamed only of wonderful things in her future. Living with her father, sister, and brother in a cramped apartment in Berlin, the small family shares what seems to be an unbreakable spirit of love and security. However, with the rise of the Nazi party and approaching dark clouds of war, any kind of future grows increasingly uncertain. Knowing little of hate and destruction, Lisel is ill prepared as the storms of battle erupt in full fury and loved ones are taken from her as her beautiful city is reduced to rubble.

With fear and despair rising within, it is through her quiet, compassionate father that Lisel discovers faith and hope. Now, in a desperate journey to find her sister, Lisel and her neighbor flee Berlin and the advancing Russians for Frankfurt, a city under the protection of the Allies. But their flight to safety is filled with pain, hunger, and terror. However, with spiritual lessons and blessings from her father, the support of departed loved ones, and her tried but undying faith in a loving Heavenly Father, perhaps Lisel can emerge like the fireweed—rising strong and beautiful from scorched ground—transforming bitterness and despair into a charity that never faileth.

Brought to Light, Neville, Jonathan
17 Brought to Light

Neville, JonathanNew, Digital Legend Press, 2015,

Paperback

Brand new softcover book!

; How do we know what Joseph Smith actually wrote? This book explains that some of the teachings long attributed to Joseph Smith were not written by him. Instead, a zealous Mormon man named Benjamin Winchester wrote articles and editorials that were later attributed to Joseph Smith. Winchester wrote under pseudonyms and anonymously, and his work was often signed "Ed." for Editor. Shortly before he died, Joseph said Winchester had "a rotten heart" and "would injure the Church as much as he could." These articles explain how Winchester did just that. Published in the Times and Seasons, an early Mormon newspaper published in Nauvoo, Illinois, Winchester's articles played a major role in developing Church doctrine on two important issues: the role of women in the Church and Book of Mormon geography and historicity. Now, for the first time, anyone can read the evidence of Winchester's activities. These new disclosures will change the way we understand these two issues today.

Brand new hardcover book!

; "No other success can compensate for failure in the home" is a statement made famous by President David O. McKay, who taught Church members the importance of focusing on the family. At the age of 32, he magnified his responsibilities as a newly called Apostle. He had to learn to juggle world travel, heavy Church assignments, and his small but growing family. Later, as a member of the First Presidency, he spent a lot of time teaching and fostering both his children and grandchildren. He embraced a new type of fatherhood in which men were more nurturing and involved in their children's lives. He seemed to be ahead of his time in his parenting style and practices.

The book takes an unprecedented and in-depth look at President McKay's parenting and family life in his own home and invites readers to learn from his best practices. There are no other books available that take a contemporary parenting theory and apply it backward into history—in this case, taking a closer look at a modern-day prophet who advocated a prominent emphasis on families.

This intimate portrayal of life in the McKay family is uniquely available because of the author's extensive access to the journals of David O. McKay, which conveyed the prophet's deepest feelings, convictions, and experiences about parenthood.

The Temple Concept, Palmer, Martin J.
20 The Temple Concept

Palmer, Martin J.New in New Dust Jacket, Eborn Books, 2015, Salt Lake City, UT

Hardcover

Brand new hardcover book!

; A temple is more than a building; it is the premier expression of sacred space. This book illuminates the concepts of sacred space and its ancillary doctrines, which form the foundation of the temple concept. Sacred space defines the nature of the holiness there. These principles are reflected in ritual & architecture. Sacred space is distinguished from profane. As the wilderness is the image of the profane, the temple is the essence of sacred space. The temple is a model of the cosmos & is cosmic in nature. It's a place of revelation. It's the source of all blessings. It is the symbolic center of the earth & a meeting place between worlds. Construction is akin to creation itself. Creation brought about order in the cosmos and overcame chaos; building the temple brings order to earth. Temple ritual includes the creation story which re-creates sacred time anew. The temple symbolizes sacred space and sacred time: the time of the first creation, the illud tempus. A deeper understanding of the temple concept will enhance temple worship.

Martin Palmer took a serious interest in the fundamental principles of the restored gospel. Interest developed into faith, knowledge & testimony during full-time missionary service in the Eastern States Mission. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in Near Eastern studies from BYU & a master of arts degree in Middle Eastern studies with emphasis in history, from the U. of U. Later he was admitted to the degree of doctor of literature & philosophy in ancient Near Eastern studies at the University of South Africa. He contributed a short article in the Encyclopedia of Mormonism & later published his first book, The Covenant Concept. In the Church he has served as Sunday School teacher & president, stake seventy, stake missionary, bishop's counselor, high councilor, & for many years a high priests instructor. He is married to the former Yvonne Pierce; they have five children.
