THE BOOK OF JASHER - 1887 - Referred to in Joshua and Second Samuel.
1 THE BOOK OF JASHER - 1887 - Referred to in Joshua and Second Samuel.

New, Archive Publishers, 2000, Heber City, Utah

Paperback

Brand new softcover book! Never been read! %% ; This is the 1887 edition of The Book of Jasher published by J. H. Parry in Salt Lake City. It is a translation of a Hebrew work purported to be one of the lost books of the Bible. Of it the translator wrote: "The ever memorable events and transactions recorded in scripture are with many others of the most interesting nature, comprehended in the BOOK OF JASHER; and they are all arrayed in that style of simple, unadorned majesty and precision, which so particularly distinguished the genius of the Hebrew language; and this, together with other numerous internal evidences, it is presumed that the book is, with the exception of some doubtful parts, a venerable monument of antiquity . . . . "It contained a treasure of information concerning those early times, upon which the histories of other nations are either silent, or cast not a single ray of real light . . . And the evidence of the whole of its contents went to illustrate and confirm the great and inestimable truths which are recorded in divine history, down to a few years later than the death of Joshua, at which period the book closes. The Latter-day Saints Messenger and Advocate
3 The Latter-day Saints Messenger and Advocate

New in New Dust Jacket, Nauvoo Press, 2014, Nauvoo, IL

Hardcover

Brand new hardcover book!

; The Messenger and Advocate was established after a mob had destroyed the printing press of the The Evening and the Morning Star in Independence, Missouri on 20 July 1833, causing the Star to relocate to Kirtland. After a brief run, the Star was discontinued in favor of a uniquely Ohio newspaper, the Latter Day Saints’ Messenger and Advocate. Oliver Cowdery served as editor and the first issue was printed in October 1834.The May 1835 issue was the last with Cowdery as editor, because there was “other business and other duties, in which my services are requisite.” John Whitmer replaced Cowdery as editor. He may have been heavily assisted in his duties by William Wines Phelps. In March 1836 Cowdery again became editor when both Whitmer and Phelps returned to Missouri. Cowdery’s brother Warren claims that he was actually performing the editorial duties. In February 1837, the printing press was sold to Joseph Smith, Jr. and Sidney Rigdon, and Warren Cowdery became the official editor. The last issue was published in September 1837 after LDS Church leaders became dissatisfied with Warren’s efforts. In October 1837 the newspaper was succeeded by the Elders’ Journal.; 8.25” x 10.75”; 576 pages,

THE SEER
4 THE SEER

New, Nauvoo Press, 2014, Nauvoo, IL

Hardcover

Brand new hardcover book! ; The Seer was an official periodical of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints which first appeared in 1853 and was published throughout 1854.

After the Church publicly acknowledged that it was teaching and practicing plural marriage at its September 1852 conference, President Brigham Young dispatched Orson Pratt to Washington, D.C., where he was asked to publish an apologetic magazine targeted at non-Mormons. The primary purpose of the magazine would be to explain and defend the principles of Mormonism.

The first edition of The Seer was published in January 1853, with future editions being produced monthly. The contents of The Seer were composed almost entirely of original writings by Pratt. Throughout its publication history, the majority of Pratt’s writing stressed the rationality of the doctrine of plural marriage. For example, Pratt dedicated 107 of the 192 total pages of The Seer to a twelve-part exposition on what he called celestial marriage.

The Seer was published in Washington, D.C. until July 1854, when publication was shifted to Liverpool, England. After only 18 issues, Pratt was forced to cease publication due to mounting financial losses. Circulation peaked at 400 copies in late 1853. “The world will not subscribe for nor read The Seer,” Pratt lamented to his brother Parley.
