INVESTIGATING THE BOOK OF MORMON WITNESSES, Anderson, Richard L.
1 INVESTIGATING THE BOOK OF MORMON WITNESSES

Anderson, Richard L.New, Deseret Book, 1989, Salt Lake City, UT

Paperback

Brand New! ; Published in every edition of the Book of Mormon are the testimonies of eight witnesses who saw the metal plates from which the prophet Joseph Smith translated the ancient scriptural account and of three witnesses who not only saw the plates but who were shown them by an angel. Who were these witnesses? Can we take their testimonies seriously? In this carefully researched, thought-provoking book, Dr. Richard Lloyd Anderson presents evidence from original sources on each of the eleven witnesses and concludes: "Statements clearly traced to the witnesses verify the testimonies printed in the Book of Mormon... After years of working with their lives and their words, I am deeply convinced that their printed testimonies must be taken at face value. "Dr. Anderson received doctorates in law and ancient history and has been a professor of ancient scripture at Brigham Young University. ; 6" x 9",

In the Strength of the Lord - The Life and Teachings of James E. Faust, Bell, James P.
3 In the Strength of the Lord - The Life and Teachings of James E. Faust

Bell, James P.Very Good in Very Good Dust Jacket, Deseret Book, 1999, Salt Lake City, UT

Hardcover

Cover has slight edge and corner wear. Previous owner name inside front cover. ; James E. Faust can still hear the bleating of his frightened little lamb. As a young boy he had left his pet out of the barn on the night of a terrible storm. "I didn't get up as I should have done. The next morning I went out to find my lamb dead. A dog had also heard its bleating cry and killed it. " His young heart was broken at the loss of his lamb, and his father's disappointment at his lack of stewardship hurt him even more. "My father said, 'Son, couldn't I trust you to take care of just one lamb? '... I resolved that day, as a little boy, that I would try to never again neglect my stewardship as a shepherd if I were ever again placed in that position. " Whether serving as a full-time missionary in Brazil or as second counselor in the First Presidency more than fifty years later, James E. Faust has never forgotten the lesson of his lost lamb. "I have not always done everything I should have, " he says, "but I have tried. " In the Strength of the Lord paints a vivid picture of a conscientious steward, a loving father, and a humble yet stalwart emissary of the Lord Jesus Christ. It also presents readers with a valuable collection of President Faust's teachings gleaned from a quarter century of inspired counsel. After being called as a General Authority in 1972, President Faust went to work and did not look back. He went forward in a spirit of helpfulness and humility, blessing the lives of Church members and nonmembers alike with kindness, wisdom, humor, encouragement, and concern. Though unassuming of credit, he has made significant contributions--from helping to plan and build the BYU Jerusalem Center, to overseeing construction of the first temple in South America, to promoting many important behind-the-scenes initiatives such as building bridges with members of other faiths. One friend recalls that as a youth President Faust "did a lot to remind us of who we were and what we were. " Likewise, as a special witness of Christ, President Faust has repeatedly reminded Latter-day Saints of who and what we are. Excerpts from his talks and writings, which In the Strength of the Lord presents topically, include doctrines he feels the world needs to hear. "The world's religious drift is obvious, " he says. "If something can be had cheaply, without exertion or sacrifice, people do not mind having a little bit of it. In contrast, the blessings of membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints require both exertion and sacrifice. . . . Ours is not a Sunday religion. It demands exemplary conduct and effort every day of the week. " As you read In the Strength of the Lord, you will discover details from a life worth emulating, find words of encouragement in counsel worth following, and be inspired to go forward in the strength of the Lord; 6.25" x 9.25"; 487 pages,

Knowing Brother Joseph Again - Perceptions and Perspectives, Bitton, Davis
5 Knowing Brother Joseph Again - Perceptions and Perspectives

Bitton, DavisNew, Greg Kofford Books, 2011, Salt Lake City, UT

Paperback

Brand New! %%

; Davis Bitton's life was cut short before he could finish revisions on this collection of insightful essays about Joseph Smith, a prophet whom he also considers a hero in both classical terms and in the context of nineteenth-century America. Millions Shall Know Brother Joseph Again explores images of Joseph Smith from a variety of perspectives--not only the devotion of believers but the hostility and skepticism of opponents. Joseph emerges from the folk memories as well as scholarly analyses. One things both ends of the spectrum agreed on was that Joseph was a towering figure, larger than life.

Receiving special attention is the aftermath of Joseph's sudden and shocking assassination. Justifications for murder, struggles with overwhelming grief, and the search for prose and poetic images to capture the desolating loss produce a seldom-explored body of formal and informal works close to the event itself.

Written in the graceful and eloquent style that is a hallmark of Davis Bitton's prose, these eleven essays capture not only the scholarly insights of one of Mormonism's most seasoned scholars but also the warmth of personal feelings and convictions about Mormonism's founding prophet. This book represents the capstone of a distinguished professional career. ; 0.48 x 9.02 x 5.98 Inches; 226 pages,

Card, Orson ScottVery Good in Very Good Dust Jacket, Shadow Mountain, 2000, Salt Lake City, UT

Hardcover

Cover has some light edge and corner wear.

; Sarai was a child of ten years, wise for her age but not yet a woman, when she first met Abram. He appeared before her in her father's house, filthy from the desert, tired and thirsty. But as the dirt of travel was washed from his body, the sight of him filled her heart. And when Abram promises Sarai to return in ten years to take her for his wife, her fate was sealed. Abram kept his promise, and Sarai kept hers they were wed, and so joined the royal house of Ur with the high priesthood of the Hebrews. So began a lifetime of great joy together, and greater peril: and with the blessing of their God, a great nation would be built around the core of their love. Bestselling author Orson Scott Card uses his fertile imagination, and uncanny insight into human nature, to tell the story of a unique woman--one who is beautiful, tough, smart, and resourceful in an era when women had little power, and are scarce in the historical record. Sarah, child of the desert, wife of Abraham, takes on vivid reality as a woman desirable to kings, a devoted wife, and a faithful follower of the God of Abraham, chosen to experience an incomparable miracle.

The Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs, Charles, R. H.
16 The Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs

Charles, R. H.Very Good with no Dust Jacket, Richard Clay & Sons, N.D., Great Britain

Paperback

Books almost like new. Only have a bit of edge and corner wear.

; The Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs is a constituent of the apocryphal scriptures connected with the Bible. It is a pseudepigraphical work comprising the dying commands of the twelve sons of Jacob. It is part of the Oskan Armenian Orthodox Bible of 1666. Fragments of similar writings were found at Qumran, but opinions are divided as to whether these are the same texts. It is considered apocalyptic literature. The Testaments were written in Hebrew or Greek, and reached their final form in the 2nd century CE. In the 13th century they were introduced into the West through the agency of Robert Grosseteste, Bishop of Lincoln, whose Latin translation of the work immediately became popular. He believed that it was a genuine work of the twelve sons of Jacob, and that the Christian interpolations were a genuine product of Jewish prophecy; he accused Jews of concealing the Testaments "on account of the prophecies of the Saviour contained in them."

Gold & Treasure - A History of John Lowe Butler II, Dalton, Craig L.
18 Gold & Treasure - A History of John Lowe Butler II

Dalton, Craig L.New in New Dust Jacket, C. L. Dalton Enterprises, 2011,

Hardcover

Brand new hardcover book! ++ ; Any descendants of John Lowe Butler I will find this biography of his namesake son to be a valuable family history resource, because Gold & Treasure is not only a comprehensive and well-researched biography of John Lowe Butler II, but also includes a wealth of information regarding the extended Butler family. This is particularly true of his brothers James and Thomas, with whom he lived and worked closely throughout their lives. In many ways, Gold & Treasure picks up where My Best for the Kingdom (Bill Hartley’s renown biography of John Lowe Butler I) ends, chronicling the extended Butler family, including considerable information on John Lowe Butler II’s siblings, wives, and children, through their various pioneer enterprises.

John Lowe Butler II was truly a lifelong pioneer! He lived among the Indians of the central plains throughout his childhood. After an 8-year odyssey, his family made it across the plains to Spanish Fork, Utah. Left fatherless at age 16, John took on the responsibility of caring for his mother and younger siblings, and relocated the family to Southern Utah. There he pioneered one area after another and explored largely unknown regions of the southwest.

Working in partnership with two of his younger brothers, John became a wealthy rancher, farmer, teamster, lumberman, mill operator, and businessman. Then, in his last decade of life, John made a huge gold strike and staked his fortune in a promising mine.

Gold & Treasure has the excitement and feel of an old west novel, with numerous pioneer treks, Indian battles, exploring expeditions, fights, riches won and lost, a fabulous gold mine, and more. What makes these stories even more interesting is that they are true accounts. The book shares the excitement, adventure, fun, humor, and joy that were all part of Butler family life, as well as some truly heart-wrenching moments. By the end of Gold & Treasure the reader will not only know about John Lowe Butler II, but will come to love him!

Included free in the back of the book is a disk containing a full electronic version of Gold & Treasure complete with color photos and images, and numerous Butler related histories, documents, and photos, as well as digital versions of much of the research material cited in the book. This same disk also contains electronic versions of My Best for the Kingdom, The Butler Saga, The Lives of Isaac Erin and Caroline Thurber, and several other books, suitable for use with most e-readers.

Gold & Treasure is the fifth biography written by Craig L. Dalton, who was responsible for the recent republication of My Best for the Kingdom and who published Bill Hartley’s most recent book, Another Kind of Gold: The Life of Albert King Thurber. Gold & Treasure is similar to those works in size and quality. It is a hard cover book consisting of 526 pages bound with a library quality smyth sewn binding and covered with a gloss color dust jacket.

Dewey, Richard LloydNew in New Dust Jacket, Stratford Books, LC, 1999, Arlington, VA

Hardcover

New! ; Few men have endured the hardships and triumphs of pioneer gunfighter, Orrin Porter Rockwell. His family was his life. His best friend, Mormon prophet Joseph Smith, was his cause. And when he faced enemies who forced his people from their homes, a seed was planted which later blossomed into his future station in life--that of the only gunman to kill more outlaws than Doc Holladay, Tom Horn, Bat Masterson and Wyatt Earp combined. Initially, he struggles with his choices, torn over whether or not to fight back, wanting to keep a watchful eye on his family and simultaneously adhere to Christian teachings of turning the other cheek. But his conscience led him down a unique path among his people to become a protector and fighter. This true story reveals his close friendship as a youngster with Joseph Smith, and follows his teenage years through an engaging yet humorous courtship with a young woman he meets and is determined to marry. The story then details his inner battles which haunt him through a frustrating marriage, where he struggles to keep domestic peace while waging a war against his enemies. Throughout it all, the center of his world becomes his oldest daughter, Emily. He takes her everywhere, through hair-raising adventures into badlands and into the deepest recesses of his heart. In this volume he faces foes from New York to Missouri which outnumber his band of friends, yet often they prevail. In fact, beating the odds becomes a way of life for them. Rockwell's inner conflicts tell the universal story of man's worst enemy being himself. He succeeds in some battles but not in others, yet consistently proves himself in one significant arena--that of friendship and loyalty. On that field, he always comes out the victor. Latter-day Saints are proud to view him as a folk hero. His story give those of all races and creeds who struggle a chance to review their own weaknesses and see a man who at least tries, and who does the best with what he has despite his extremely, and at times incredibly, rough edges. Reading this book allows the reader to see what a real hero can truly be about. Best of all, it's an accurate story, with years of meticulous research behind it, all of which glows in the authenticity of the times and events of early Mormon history, while pulling the reader into real people's lives and exploring their intriguing, complex characters. ; Vol. 1/4/2017; 6.25" x 9.25",
