7 THE PORTER ROCKWELL CHRONICLES - VOL 1 - A Biographical Novel of His Miraculous Life, Loves & Legacy

Dewey, Richard LloydNew in New Dust Jacket, Stratford Books, 2001, Provo, UT U. S. A.

Hardcover

Brand new hard cover with black and gold illustrated dust jacket. Never been read! ; Few men have endured the hardships and triumphs of pioneer gunfighter, Orrin Porter Rockwell. His family was his life. His best friend, Mormon prophet Joseph Smith, was his cause. And when he faced enemies who forced his people from their homes, a seed was planted which later blossomed into his future station in life--that of the only gunman to kill more outlaws than Doc Holladay, Tom Horn, Bat Masterson and Wyatt Earp combined. Initially, he struggles with his choices, torn over whether or not to fight back, wanting to keep a watchful eye on his family and simultaneously adhere to Christian teachings of turning the other cheek. But his conscience led him down a unique path among his people to become a protector and fighter. This true story reveals his close friendship as a youngster with Joseph Smith, and follows his teenage years through an engaging yet humorous courtship with a young woman he meets and is determined to marry. The story then details his inner battles which haunt him through a frustrating marriage, where he struggles to keep domestic peace while waging a war against his enemies. Throughout it all, the center of his world becomes his oldest daughter, Emily. He takes her everywhere, through hair-raising adventures into badlands and into the deepest recesses of his heart. In this volume he faces foes from New York to Missouri which outnumber his band of friends, yet often they prevail. In fact, beating the odds becomes a way of life for them. Rockwell's inner conflicts tell the universal story of man's worst enemy being himself. He succeeds in some battles but not in others, yet consistently proves himself in one significant arena--that of friendship and loyalty. On that field, he always comes out the victor. Latter-day Saints are proud to view him as a folk hero. His story give those of all races and creeds who struggle a chance to review their own weaknesses and see a man who at least tries, and who does the best with what he has despite his extremely, and at times incredibly, rough edges. Reading this book allows the reader to see what a real hero can truly be about. Best of all, it's an accurate story, with years of meticulous research behind it, all of which glows in the authenticity of the times and events of early Mormon history, while pulling the reader into real people's lives and exploring their intriguing, complex characters. ; The Porter Rockwell Chronicles Series; Vol. 1; 6.25" x 9.25"; 486 pages,

; This is the autobiographical account of Bill Hickman, Chief of the Destroying Angels, Head Danite, etc. After Mr. Beadle began to examine the history of the Mormon church; and while all the Mormon people spoke of Bill Hickman as a desperately bad man, and guilty of untold murders, he was struck by two curious and then unexplainable facts. The first was that while everybody, from Brigham Young down, united in calling Hickman a murderer, and while evidence could easily be collected of several of his crimes, not a single attempt has been made by priest or people to bring him to justice. The second point is that long after Hickman was known as a murderer, he was successively promoted to a number of offices; he was Sheriff and Representative of one county, Assessor and Collector of Taxes, and Marshal; and during all this time he was on terms of personal intimacy with Brigham Young.

15 THE SUNNY SLOPES OF LONG AGO

Hudson, Wilson M. and Allen Maxwell (Ed)Very Good in Very Good Dust Jacket, Southern Methodist University Press, 1966,

Hardcover

Dust jacket has plastic protective covering. Book in good condition. Pages clean and tight with no noticed markings. There is, however, some yellow marks on the inside of the front and back covers. ; "Here's to the sunny slopes of long ago!" This was a favorite toast of John A. Lomax, a co-founder of the Texas Folklore Society. This sketch of Dobie's old friend is followed by Lomax's own "Cowboy Lingo, : which was found among Dobie's papers, and by two other articles on the cowboy by men whose names sound out in the history of southwestern writing-- Eugene Manlove Rhodes and Andy Adams. The theme of the cowboy and the West is further pursued in "The Cowboy's Code," "The Cowboy Enters the Movies, " "Billy the Kid, Hired Gun or Hero," and "Laureates of the Western Range." Next comes a collection of passages on folklore from Dobie's writings. The second half of Sunny Slopes illustrates this sort of enrichment through the contributions of a number of TFS member-authors. ; 6.25" x 9.25"; 204 pages,

16 The Outlaw Trail - The Srory of Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch

Kelly, Charles; Meadows, Anne & Dan BuckNew, Bison Books, 1996,

Paperback

Brand new softcover book! ; The Wild Bunch, the confederation of western outlaws headed by Butch Cassidy, found sanctuary on the rugged Outlaw Trail. Stretching across Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico, this trail offered desert and mountain hideouts to bandits and cowboys. The almost inaccessible Hole-in-the-Wall in Wyoming was a station on the Outlaw Trail well known to Butch Cassidy. To the south, in Utah, was the inhospitable Robbers’ Roost, where Butch and his friends camped in 1897 after a robbery at Castle Gate.

Charles Kelly recreates the mean and magnificent places frequented by the Wild Bunch and a slew of lesser outlaws. At the same time, he brings Butch Cassidy to life, traces his criminal apprenticeship and meeting with the Sundance Kid, and masterfully describes the exploits of the Wild Bunch. ; 1 x 8 x 5.3 Inches; 374 pages,
