Paperback

Cover has some light edge and corner wear. %% ; Cover has some light edge and corner wear. %% ; This remarkable volume gives the reader an intimate glimpse into the deep and devout spiritual nature of the author, as he discusses the Deity, the family, and the nation. He speaks in the fearless manner so characteristic of him, giving heart and courage to the weak and the doubting. He gives strong reassurance to those who need a bolstering hand in defending true Christianity against avowed atheists, unbelieving intellectuals, and those who have political reasons for crushing true religion. To love Christ means service to Him with full heart and mind and soul. It is all encompassing. It embraces unquestioning faith, complete obedience, our day-to-day living habits, our family, and our civic life. The whole duty of man is to serve God and keep His commandments. Benson teaches that one cannot be a good Christian and be a careless or inactive church member. One cannot be a wholehearted Christian and not be a good family man, for a good family is indispensable to the highest kind of living. He also teaches that no man can be a good Christian and at the same time be a bad citizen, a law breaker, or dishonest in any form. Paperback

Brand new softcover book! %% ; Brand new softcover book! %% ; The Lord has decreed that this land should be "the place of the new Jerusalem, which should come down out of heaven, and the holy sanctuary of the Lord." (Ether 13:3) Here is our nation's destiny! To serve God's eternal purposes and to prepare this land and people for America's eventual destiny, He "established the Constitution of this land, by the hands of wise men whom [He] raised up unto this very purpose, and redeemed the land by the shedding of blood." (D&C 101:80.)No man, however brilliant and perceptive, shall have a complete perspective of our nation's history without this understanding and conviction. He must be persuaded by God's truth if he is to obtain an true and complete picture of our nation's origin and destiny. Secular scholarship, though useful, provides an incomplete and sometimes inaccurate view of our history. The real story of America is one that shows the hand of God in our nation's beginning. Why is it that this view of our history is almost lost in classrooms in America? Why is it that one must turn to the writers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to find this view inferred or stated? The answer may perhaps be found in Abraham Lincoln's proclamation: "We have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us." Even unto Bloodshed: An LDS Perspective on War, Boyce, Duane
8 Even unto Bloodshed: An LDS Perspective on War

Boyce, DuaneNew, Kofford Books, 2015, Salt Lake City, UT

Paperback

; ; When carefully examined, both secular and scriptural arguments for pacifism ultimately fail. Once such pacifist arguments are considered, rebutted, and respectfully set aside, it is possible to construct a sound framework for a scriptural view of war, at least in general terms. Such a framework is not pacifist, but it is anything but aggressive, and includes the quality of heart—not to mention, the wisdom—expected of all disciples of Christ, whatever their task or circumstance. It was not an anomaly when the Lord instructed the Nephites to defend their families “even unto bloodshed;” comprehensively understood, the statement expresses a genuine, profound, and conceptually rich scriptural principle.

Praise for Even Unto Bloodshed:

“A careful and detailed argument against pacifism has long been needed, and it is hard to imagine someone doing a better job of it. The scholarship in this volume is impressive, and it is likely to be the definitive work on the subject for years to come. Truly a major accomplishment.” — K. Codell Carter, Professor of Philosophy, Brigham Young University

“The question of how (or whether) participation in war can be reconciled with Christian ethics has occupied the minds of such great thinkers as Augustine, Aquinas, and Grotius. Latter-day Saints, however, have given little systematic attention to the matter thus far. But it’s time. This book brilliantly opens a long overdue conversation. Carefully and systematically weighing all of the relevant scriptural texts as well as applicable statements of modern prophets, it will be indispensable for all future Mormon discussions of the subject.” — Daniel C. Peterson, professor of Islamic studies and Arabic at Brigham Young University, founder of the Middle Eastern Texts Initiative, and editor of Interpreter: A Journal of Mormon Scripture

The Liberal Soul; Applying the Gospel of Jesus Christ in Politics, Davis, Richard
11 The Liberal Soul; Applying the Gospel of Jesus Christ in Politics

Davis, RichardNew, Greg Kofford Books, Inc., 2014,

Paperback

Brand new softcover book! ; Brand new softcover book! ; The Liberal Soul offers something lacking in LDS culture. That is the presentation of a different way for Latter-day Saints to examine the question of how to be faithful disciples of Christ and good citizens. It shows public policy decision-making regarding government role as the manifestation of the “liberal soul” rather than as the libertarianism advocated by past Mormon speakers and writers such as Ezra Taft Benson, Cleon Skousen, or Vern Andersen. It also takes a different approach from the less radical but still traditional economic conservative attitudes of well-known politicians such as Orrin Hatch or Mitt Romney.

Davis suggests that a Latter-day Saint can approach economic policy, war, the environment, and social issues with the perspective that society is basically good and not evil, tolerance and forbearance are desirable qualities instead of bad ones, and that government can and does play a positive role as a vehicle of society in improving the lives of citizens. He describes how Latter-day Saints can apply the Gospel of Jesus Christ to our roles at each of these three levels—individual, group, and society—rather than assuming the societal level violates the principles of the Gospel. The result is that Latter-day Saints can help bring about a Zion society—one where all benefit, the most vulnerable are aided and not ignored, inclusion is the rule and not the exception, and suspicion and fear are replaced by love and acceptance.

Hardcover

Brand new hard cover. New dust jacket photo of pistol & a rose on the cover. Never been read! ; Brand new hard cover. New dust jacket photo of pistol & a rose on the cover. Never been read! ; Orrin Porter Rockwell served as U. S. Deputy Marshal, Indian Fighter, guerrilla, and bodyguard to Brigham Young. In his early Missouri days he suffered months of dungeon-style imprisonment at the hands of anti-Mormon persecutors but, unlike many Mormons, Rockwell fought back and earned the nickname, "The Avenging Angel. "In the West, he purportedly killed more men than Wyatt Earp, Doc Holladay, Batt Masterson, and Tom Horn combined. He also held a supernatural mystic to outlaws. He claimed Joseph Smith commanded if he would not cut off his hair, he could not see in a fight. Thus, he became known as the latter-day Samson of the West, where outlaws actually gathered about campfires and sang ballads about him. His story as a guerrilla fighter against 2500 U. S. Soldiers in the Utah War is a gripping tale, unknown even to many scholars. In this book, explosive early Mormon history is unraveled with Rockwell in the forefront. Richard Lloyd Dewey quotes hundreds of original sources--journals, letters, and court records--some from sources never tapped before, and answers questions left hanging over a hundred years. In the process he reports little-known events and reveals a colorful, intensely loyal character to his church--yet a portrait in dichotomy, due to human frailties. Although much of Rockwell's life is pieced together form painstaking research, the frontiersman is still somewhat shrouded in mystery, yet all known, recorded "Porter Rockwell Stories" are included in the volume. The result is an intriguing trip through American history... A delightful and stimulating trip indeed. ; 6.25" x 9.25"; 592 pages; 9789297532326, Illustrated by Price, Clark Kelley (Illustrator),

18 Henry Burkhardt - and LDS Realpolitik in Communist East Germany

Kuehne, RaymondNew, The University of Utah Press, 2011, Salt Lake City, UT

Paperback

Brand new softcover book! ; When the Soviet army occupied eastern Germany at the end of World War II, more than 6,000 members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints fell under the control of the totalitarian and openly atheistic regime of the German Democratic Republic. Due to the relative isolation of the LDS Church in East Germany, a young missionary, Henry Burkhardt, became the official representative of the church to the communist government, a position that lasted for 40 years. Told largely through original documents and interviews, Henry Burkhardt is a documentary biography that contains two stories: Burkhardt’s life story and a case study of church-state relations in the GDR.

After two decades of government efforts to curtail the LDS Church, Burkhardt became the foundation upon which church leaders in the United States would eventually build an improved relationship with the government. Despite the improved relationship with key government offices, Burkhardt was viewed negatively by the Stasi, who watched and reported his every movement. Kuehne uses Burkhardt’s Stasi file to present an interesting contrast to the accounts of a working church-state relationship that saw the construction of the only LDS temple ever built in a communist country. ; 7" x 10"; 208 pages,

20 Revealed Educational Principles & the Public Schools

Monnett, JackNew, Archive Publishers, 2000, Heber City, Utah

Paperback

Brand new softcover book! %% ; Brand new softcover book! %% ; "Revealed Educational Principles & the Public Schools" has become a pivotal book in the LDS home schooling movement. It historically demonstrates that the Church has had reservations about the educational role of government and the secular nature of public learning. This book was named as "Book of the Year" by the LDS Home Educators' Association. From Dr. W. Cleon Skousen, author and educator: "This book is the best history that I know of concerning the valiant struggle of LDS parents to get a balanced education for their children. The determination of secular educators to completely eliminate moral and spiritual teachings from the schools is contrary to the most fundamental policies advocated by both Franklin and Jefferson. It is a continuing struggle which makes this book of such primary significance. "From Dr. Oliver DeMille, Provost, George Wythe College: "Reading Dr. Monnett's history of LDS education is like reading a manual for solving modern educational concerns. Could it be that our hardest educational problems were answered by the prophets over a century ago?"From David M. Nelson, President of Benjamin Franklin Academies: "This book, more than any other I have read, helps clear up the misunderstandings that exist concerning the divine role parents play in the gospel with respect to their children's education. "From Joyce Kinmont, President and Founder of the LDS Home Educators' Association: "After all the early Saints had sacrificed, if they had been just a little more visionary, a little more obedient, how much different things would be for our children today. This book tells a sad story but points to a happier ending; it will change the course of educational history in the Church. That's why we named this book our "Book of the Year.
