1 Hardy, ThomasMayor of Casterbridge

Airmont Pub Co, 1970, New York: PaperbackVery Good

A minimal amount of rubbing along the edges and corners, but no noticed markings and the pages are clean and tight. ; We first meet Michael Henchard, the man who became the mayor of Casterbridge, walking with his wife and child along a dusty highway which leads to the village of Weydon-Priors. At the very outset the author has set the stage upon which Henchard must play a part. Skillfully, hardy heightens our awareness of the racking emptiness of Michael's unemployed lot and homeless existence by contrasting it with the bustle of the fair. For a fair is a kind of dramatization of man's endeavors. Its directed activities of buying and selling and consequent opportunities for human contact and enjoyment are a pleasant commentary on the possibilites of the human situation. But for a man like Michael, unemployed and homeless, an invitation to participate in this dramatization is not extended. The Mayor of Casterbridge is too much a man of character to be anything in Hardy's world but a victim of himself, of nature, and of society. ; 4.5" x 7.5"; 256 pages,
