"But, you're coming back, Joseph!" When he didn't answer, bending instead to kiss his children, Emma tried to be cheerful. I'll attend the court hearing, " she said. "Governor Ford has pledged to protect you. " Unconsciously, Joseph's hand went to his pocket where he kept a recent letter from Ford. "Never doubt my love, Emma. We have come far from Harmony...I don't regret any of it. " "Nor I, " she choked out. He kissed her tenderly, taking precious time to enjoy the touch of her lips. Then he asked for the final time, "Can you train my sons to walk in their father's footsteps?" She broke into sobs then, and the children, hearing their mother weeping, began to wail. He tore himself from their arms, and Emma followed him to the door. "Your're coming back!" she cried with determination. He didn't answer as he took her face in his hands, kissed her slowly and passionately one last time, then descended the stairs. Joseph embraced his mother, kissed her cheek, then looked for the last time into the eyes he had loved as long as he could remember, and bid her adieu. The children gathered around their mother. Julia's youthful arms encircled her as she tried to give comfort. Mother Smith moved back to the doorstep and stood with the children.
