1 De Witt, Julia A. W.How He Made His Fortune

Congregational Sunday-School and Publishing Society, 1889, Boston: HardcoverGood+

Blue hardcover has edge and corner wear, rubbing and light damage. Markings in pen and pencil inside. Pages are tight. Overall good condition! ; The 21st of June, 1877, will long be remembered by the people of Central Pennsylvania as the day on which seven "Molly Maguires" expiated their crimes upon the gallows, and the organization known by that name came to an end. It is only those who suffered from the cruelty and depredations of this secret organization that can realize the extent of the power it wielded; "an organization before which," to use the words of one who, after years of unremitting toil, succeeded in bringing its secrets to light and its leaders to punishment, "fear and terror fled cowering to homes that afforded no sanctuary against the vengeance of their pursuers, and behind wich stalked darkness and despair, brooding like grim shadows over desolated hearths and ruined homes." We do not apprehend a similar reign of terror, for we grow wiser, if not better, with experience; but the same greed of gold, lust of power, and pride of life, exist to-day, and we may learn a lesson for the present from the events of the past. The incidents of the following tale transpired during the existence of this organization, and most of the characters are taken from life. It has been the author's effort to tell the story in such a manner that each reader may realize how much he can accomplish towards the solustion of the social problems of the day, and averting the dangers that threaten our beloved republic. - May 3, 1888. ; 5" x 7.5"; 317 pages,
