Joseph Smith’s Kirtland – 8 DVD Set
1 Joseph Smith’s Kirtland – 8 DVD Set

New, History of the Saints, 2015,

DVD

Brand New DVD.

; From 1831 to 1838, the Latter-day Saints were in Kirtland, Ohio. From here came forth more than 70 revelations now found in the Doctrine and Covenants as well as the beginnings of modern Latter-day Saints church government. Temple worship was revealed anew and the building up of Zion began in earnest. It was a period of miracles and Pentecost—a time of struggle and wrenching sacrifice—a period in Church History when many wonderful people joined the Latter-day Saints church and a few left.

Joseph Smith’s Kirtland, the latest chapter in the History of the Saints television and radio series, will inspire and enlighten serious students of Latter-day Saint history as well as those who want to learn more about the beginnings of the Mormon movement in America.

Brand new hardcover book!

; Anthony W. Ivins (1852-1934) migrated to St. George, Utah, at age nine where he later became an influential civic and ecclesiastical leader. He married Elizabeth A. Snow, daughter of apostle Erastus F. Snow. Ivins was a first cousin of Heber J. Grant, and served as his counselor while Grant was LDS president. Ivins filled several Mormon missions to Mexico and presided as the Juarez, Mexico stake president where he performed post-manifesto marriages. He was appointed by the U.S. government as an Indian agent, and was warmly acquainted with Porfirio Diaz, president of Mexico. Involved in politics in St. George, Ivins held aspirations of running as a Democrat for governor of Utah. In 1907, he was ordained an apostle and later advanced to the First Presidency. Tone, as he called himself, was an accomplished horseman who worked with, and invested in, livestock. He was a game-hunting cowboy who became a statesman for both his country and his expanding religious community.

Though in his correspondence Ivins expressed paramount concern for members of his family, he rarely mentions them in his journals. Rather, his diaries chronicle his business and religious observations including meetings with the Quorum of the Twelve and others. He records meetings of the apostles where decisions were made to remove Church leaders from office who had entered into polygamy after 1904, and details the Church’s dealings with the Mexican government to safeguard the Mormon colonists. There are also discussions where doctrinal principles were clarified. For example, in 1912, Ivins reported that President Joseph F. Smith addressed Brigham Young’s Adam God teachings and affirmed that it was “not a doctrine of the Church.” Ivins clearly loved the ruggedness of outdoor life, as evidenced in his passion for hunting, but was also intrigued with the curiosities at the Utah State Fair, the entertaining showmanship of Buffalo Bill, and the refinement of the theater. Tragedy became commonplace as he recorded vigilante-like justice against Indians and Mexicans who were killed for stealing food, and witnessing the execution of John D. Lee, a once favored son of Mormonism. Appendices of Cowpboy Apostle include Ivins Record Book of Marriage and an essay by Ivins son, H. Grant Ivins titled “Polygamy in Mexico as Practiced by the Mormon Church, 1895-1905.”

The Parallel Book of Mormon The 1830, 1837, and 1840 Editions, Bench, Curt A. And Joseph Smith
6 The Parallel Book of Mormon The 1830, 1837, and 1840 Editions

Bench, Curt A. And Joseph SmithNew, Smith-Pettit Foundation, 2008,

Hardcover

Three separate editions of the Book of Mormon appeared during Joseph Smith’s lifetime. These are the 1830 edition, published in Palmyra, New York; the 1837 edition published in Kirtland, Ohio; and the 1840 edition published in Nauvoo, Illinois. The printing of each of these was supervised by Joseph Smith, who made and authorized corrections and improvements to the text of each.

These were the only three editions Joseph Smith was involved with. In the current publication, the text of all three is reproduced in parallel-column format for comparison, allowing readers to see where corrections and other changes were made during the book's first decade. This is the first time for the three editions to be presented in this format. The text is unchanged from the originals, the eccentricities retained but nevertheless re-typeset for ease in reading and comparing.

Curt A. Bench, bookseller and student of Mormon history for over three decades, provides the publication background for these three landmark editions of this work of scripture. Bench recounts the fascinating history behind the appearance of each new edition, all of them produced under primitive frontier conditions and in the context of criticism from outside and inside the church, all of which made their successful production even more remarkable than otherwise.

7 Approaching Antiquity; Joseph Smith and the Ancient World

Blumell, Lincoln H. & Matthew J. Grey & Andrew H. HedgesNew in New Dust Jacket, RSC/Deseret Book Company, 2015,

Hardcover

Brand new hardcover book!

; A collection of essays by prominent LDS scholars—including Richard Bushman and David Holland—Approaching Antiquity discusses the interest in the ancient world shared by Joseph Smith and the early Latter-day Saints. Topics include Joseph Smith's fascination with the ancient Americas, his interaction with the Bible, his study of Hebrew and Greek, his reading of Jewish and Christian apocryphal writings, and his work with the Book of Abraham in the context of 19th-century Egyptology. Together, these essays demonstrate that Joseph Smith's interests in antiquity played an important role in his prophetic development as he sought to recover ancient scripture, restore the ancient Church, and bring the Latter-day Saints into fellowship with the sacred past.

9 The Persistence of Polygamy, Vol. 3; Fundamentalist Mormon Polygamy from 1890 to the Present

Bringhurst, Newell G. & Craig L. FosterNew, John Whitmer Books, 2015,

Paperback

Brand new softcover book!

; Fundamentalist Mormon polygamy emerged from LDS Church President Wilford Woodruff’s 1890 Manifesto, which ostensibly rescinded the practice of plural marriage among Mormons. This volume explores Mormon fundamentalism from several perspectives. Among the topics considered is the history of mainstream Latter-day Saint polygamy in Mexico, John Taylor’s controversial 1886 revelation implying the irrevocability of polygamy, and the rise of fundamentalist Mormon polygamy in the early twentieth century. Other essays provide carefully crafted portraits of fundamentalist Mormon leaders such as Joseph White Musser, Rulon C. Allred, Rulon T. Jeffs, and Warren S. Jeffs. Also discussed is the 1980s schism between the FLDS church and Centennial Park Community, the 2008 Texas raid on the FLDS YFZ Ranch, and modern media stereotyping of Mormon polygamy. Three essays provide personal perspectives on present-day polygamy: a recollection of growing up within a fundamentalist Mormon community, a reading of D&C 132 from a fundamentalist perspective, and an examination of descendants of early Mormon polygamists who embraced fundamentalism. Other areas of research include the changing style of fundamentalist clothing and hair styles, fundamentalist attitudes and practices affecting African-Americans, and the plural wives of fundamentalist Mormon leaders. The volume concludes with a bibliographical evaluation of relevant literature. In this third volume of The Persistence of Polygamy, Newell G. Bringhurst and Craig L. Foster have assembled seventeen original essays that explore the fascinating history of plural marriage among fundamentalist Mormons—an enduring practice of The Principle.

THE ESSENTIAL PARLEY P. PRATT, Crawley, Peter L.
14 THE ESSENTIAL PARLEY P. PRATT

Crawley, Peter L.New in New Dust Jacket, Signature Books, Salt Lake City, UT

Hardcover

Brand new hardcover book! Never been read! ; One of the first converts to the LDS church, Parley Parker Pratt (1807-57) would eventually become early Mormonism's most famous and widely published defender. Born in western New York, he converted to Mormonism in late 1830 and was called to the Quorum of Twelve Apostles five years later as one of its founding members. He was strong-willed and largely self-educated, as his vitae reflects: he served several missions for the church; participated in Zion's Camp, the militia which marched to Missouri to rescue threatened church members; quarreled with Joseph Smith over finances and narrowly escaped excommunication; founded the Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star in England; married several plural wives in Nauvoo, Illinois; immigrated to the Great Salt Lake valley; and continued to fill additional overseas missions. Best known for his fiery apologetic writings such as A Voice of Warning (1837) , Key to the Science of Theology (1855) , and for his autobiography which was published posthumously in 1874 by his son, who wrote most of it, Pratt nevertheless defined Mormon doctrine and theology for much of the nineteenth century. He was killed in 1857 in Arkansas by the estranged husband of one of his polygamous wives. The husband, an outsider, did not share Pratt's and other Mormons' contempt for civil authority over marriage. ; Classics in Mormon Thought Series No. 1 Series; 6" x 9"; 268 pages,

15 Eliza - The Life And Faith Of Eliza R. Snow

Davidson, Karen Lynn; Derr, Jill MulvayNew in New Dust Jacket, Deserert book, 2013, Salt Lake City, UT

Hardcover

Brand new hardcover book! ; Eliza R. Snow is one of the most revered women in the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We hear stories of her faith and strength, and we sing her beloved hymns. She was fondly known as "Zion's Poetess" and also as "Presidentess," because of her leadership of Relief Society and her role in forming and directing organizations for young women and children. She has remained a legend for generations of Latter-day Saints, but we know less about her "variegated life," as she described it—the personal joys and sorrows brought about by unfolding events in the young Church of which she was a part.
This intimate look at Eliza R. Snow, by authors Karen Lynn Davidson and Jill Mulvay Derr, reveals a more private side of this extraordinary woman. She emerges as a bright young poet in Ohio, a new convert to the restored Church, a seamstress, and a sharer in the persecutions and hardships of the early Saints. We see a member of the households of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, a dedicated temple worker, and a traveling Relief Society president with a zeal for teaching the gospel.
Her delight in nature, her love for family and friends, and her outlook of hope for the cause of Zion are reflected here through selections from some of her best poems. Photographs, artifacts, and personal letters add visual beauty to this inspiring introduction to her fascinating life.

Derr, Jill Mulvay & Carol Cornwall Madsen & Kate Holbrook & Matthew J. GrowNew in New Dust Jacket, Church Historian's Press, 2016, Salt Lake City, UT

Hardcover

Brand new hardcover book!

; This collection of original documents explores the fascinating and largely unknown history of the Relief Society in the nineteenth century. The story begins with the founding of the Nauvoo Female Relief Society, and the complete and unabridged minutes of that organization are reproduced in this book for the first time in print. The large majority of the volume covers the lesser-known period after the Relief Society was reestablished in territorial Utah and began to spread to areas as remote as Hawaii and England. Not only did Relief Society women care for their families and the poor, they manufactured and sold goods, went to medical school, gave healing blessings and set apart Relief Society officers, storied grain, built assembly halls, fought for women's suffrage, founded a hospital, defended the practice of plural marriage, and started the Primary and Young Women organizations. Prominent in the documents are the towering figures of Mormon women's history from this period—Emma Smith, Eliza R. Snow, Emmeline B. Wells, Zina D.H. Young, and many others.

Perspectives on Mormon Theology; Scriptural Theology, Faulconer, James E. & Joseph M. Spencer
17 Perspectives on Mormon Theology; Scriptural Theology

Faulconer, James E. & Joseph M. SpencerNew, Greg Kofford Books, Inc., 2015,

Paperback

Brand new softcover book!

; The phrase "theology of scripture" can be understood in two distinct ways. First, theology of scripture would be reflection on the nature of scripture, asking questions about what it means for a person or a people to be oriented by a written text (rather than or in addition to an oral tradition or a ritual tradition). In this first sense, theology of scripture would form a relatively minor part of the broader theological project, since the nature of scripture is just one of many things on which theologians reflect. Second, theology of scripture would be theological reflection guided by scripture, asking questions of scriptural texts and allowing those texts to shape the direction the theologian's thoughts pursue. In this second sense, theology of scripture would be less a part of the larger theological project than a way of doing theology, since whatever the theologian takes up reflectively, she investigates through the lens of scripture. The essays making up this collection reflect attentiveness to both ways of understanding the phrase "theology of scripture." Each essay takes up the relatively un-self-conscious work of reading a scriptural text but then-at some point or another-asks the self-conscious question of exactly what she or he is doing in the work of reading scripture. We have thus attempted in this book (1) to create a dialogue concerning what scripture is for Latter-day Saints, and (2) to focus that dialogue on concrete examples of Latter-day Saints reading actual scripture texts.

19 Let Us Reason Together; Essays in Honor of the Life's Work of Robert Millet

Fluhman, J. Spencer & Brent L. TopNew in New Dust Jacket, RSC/Deseret Book Company, 2015,

Hardcover

A single volume cannot accurately measure the influence of a beloved colleague, but this one nevertheless stands as modest evidence of Robert L. Millet s prodigious impact over a career that spanned nearly four decades. His retirement provided an opportunity to gather some of those who count him as a mentor, colleague, and friend. They offer this collection of essays as a monument to his remarkable career as an administrator, teacher, and writer. That these pieces range across topics, disciplines, and even religious traditions seems especially appropriate given Millet s own broad reach. His students number in the thousands, his readers number perhaps ten times that number, and his friends in academia, the Church Educational System, and around the globe in many faiths would be difficult to number indeed. Both in terms of his staggering literary production and in his broad collection of colleagues, it is not an overstatement to place Bob Millet among the most influential Latter-day Saint voices of the past quarter century.; 6.25" x 9.25"; 414 pages,
